Just found out I got a solid B in chem! I have no idea how this happened, but I’ll take it. I’d like to say I strive for A’s, and I have A’s in all my other courses so far (only one more that’s not up yet) but in chemistry I just strive to pass. That’s about all I can manage. I’m guessing my lab grade saved my sorry ass.

Waiting on one more grade, and then I can officially relax about this semester :)

Long run tomorrow hopefully, and my new daypack arrived today! ALSO, I have to get the winter tires off the Jeep and am lucky enough to have been offered a great deal on some gnarly 31’s! I have a set of snowflake rims that I think I’m going to have painted matte black and then throw them on the new tires. Stoked!

Research paper down, presentation tomorrow - everyone remember it’s a speech on inhalation anaesthesia, not an experiment using auditory anaesthesia… pretend you care.

Also, I have to include the title which disobey came up with - “Count Backwards from Woof: The Chemistry of Inhalation Anaesthesia in Veterinary Medicine” (not that my paper really differentiates much between anaesthetics in vet med and human med, since it’s a really mini research paper, but it gives me the opportunity to use a fun title).

Inhalation anaesthesia, why did I think I wanted to write about you?

Where do Goldfish Come From?

Let’s be honest, this is pretty much my idea of science.

Does anyone understand chemistry? Anyone?

Because I sure as hell don’t.

Goals:

  • Finish paper on the chemistry of inhalation anaesthesia
  • Study for chemistry exam on Tuesday (Gas Laws, Acids and Bases, blah blah… it’s basic chemistry, but hell if I know what they’re going on about; and here I am considering piling on Gen Chem, Organic, and Biochem - I can barely get through Idiot Chem!)
  • Chemistry online quiz due Tuesday
  • Chemistry online practice exam
  • Parasitology lab online test

GAHHHHHHH.

T cells are amazing white blood cells that play a crucial role in cell-mediated immunity. They can be divided into several categories - notably helper, cytotoxic, memory, regulatory, and natural killer (NK) - and their primary role within the immune system is to search out and destroy both invading pathogens and abnormal cells. Helper T cells also help to regulate the immune response.
The image above features a cytotoxic T cell, which destroy abnormal cells (most notably virally infected cells and tumour cells) and are also implicated in organ transplant rejection. Dendritic cells, pictured cyan blue in the photo, constitutively express high levels of both class I and class II MCH molecules - the type of receptor that cytotoxic T cells recognise - making them extraordinary potent activators capable of stimulating even “naive” T cells that have never encountered an antigen.

Running and general update

Despite that I’ve only been able to run twice a week these last few weeks, I am feeling pretty good. Sore, but good. Last weekend I did eight miles, yesterday I did an easy four, and this weekend I’m hoping for 8-9. Next weekend will be 10 or 11, and then the following weekend will be the half marathon! Not exactly what you’d call proper training, I suppose, as I should have been working toward this ages ago, but it’ll do! I’m actually kind of excited.

In terms of school, this round of exams is almost over - really only worried about chemistry exam next Tuesday (and also the paper I have to write; inhalation anaesthesia on a molecular level… does anyone understand this?!). Anywho, one month left of school - I’m trying to stay positive!

Tomorrow a friend and I are going to Cornell (School of Vet Med) Open House; this is more for M than me, since it’s the path she wants to take. She has a clear idea of her future, mine future is twistier than a knot.

And in a little over a month, I’m off for the Outer Banks with my best friend; we’ll be sleeping in hammocks, hiking, sailing, and generally enjoying the beach for almost a week! Super excited.

birdsforthemind replied to your photoset: Hey, thanks for the crazy reblogs of my crazy dog……
what are you trying to do on word that’s so frustrating?

Make charts, for the most part. This should be simple, but Word keeps changing my font, cutting off my margins, and I have no idea why. :( Bah!

I also need to finish this all by tomorrow… hrmm…

Okay, my cell phone takes terrible pictures - but look! A barn owl! In my class!
Today was the last Tuesday I have my wildlife rehab night class, and a falconer brought in a peregrine, a small hawk I should know the name of but don’t, a barn owl, and a snowy owl. The barn owl was captive bred and raised so we were allowed to pet him.
Best part of my day? Ohhh yeah!

Studying chemistry makes gouging my eyeballs out with a rusty spoon look like a pleasant alternative.

I seem to be coming down with Ebola. Sorry, best be excused from that exam tomorrow…

No, it’s not even close to anatomically accurate, but at least they’re listed in the right order, cranial to caudal! Uh… I’m not even sure if this counts as legit studying… just here procrastina—oh, I’ll finish this later…
